Ok, this is very cool. Inspired by Duane Keiser’s postcard paintings, I decided to build my own cigar box pochade for doing small paintings. (I have a couple of other pochade boxes, but they’re just a little too big for what I wanted. Plus I thought it would be fun to try to build one.)
After a little googling, I ran across this link that describes the process of turning a cigar box into a pochade box. I went around the corner to the local tobacco shop and found a whole stack of cigar boxes, and it turns out that they all cost $1. (That’s right, that’s not a typo — they were all just one dollar.)
So I picked up a couple of the nicer looking boxes and took them home, and later that night I rummaged around in the basement through all of the bits and pieces I had left over from assembling various Ikea furniture over the years. After a little off-the-cuff design work and some work with the cordless drill, I had a brand-spankin’ new pochade box. And all for just $1.
Very cool, and I can’t wait to break it in! (And just think, I could make 199 more pochade boxes for the price of a single fancy pochade box from one of the high-end makers. Sorry Open Box M.)
Hi John, I just stopped by your site in search of making my own pochade box,I can’t afford a pricey one from openboxm, and I don’t want to use and old suitcase either,(does’nt fit the artist public image in spite of the practical applications) I like the cigar box idea,I think I’ll make one myself. Thanks.
